Where did you go to school?
Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
Anything in particular you remember about school or early practice?
When I came to San Francisco from the Midwest in the 1980 recession, I spent weeks dropping off resumes at design firms. It was a great way to get to know San Francisco, and I spent a lot of time chatting with architects and designers – no one seemed to be too busy.
What do you do at RMW?
That’s what everyone asks. After 32 years, I’ve done most every job I’ve wanted to – drafting, designing, master planning, technical specifications, contracts, construction management, marketing, operations, practice management, and studio management in architecture, interior design, and tenant development. My plan is to keep practicing until I get it right.
What was your favorite recent travel experience?
That one’s easy – a two-week trekking trip in Nepal. Two of my favorite things are wild rivers and mountain peaks, and the Himalayas have plenty of both. Combined with the wonderful Nepalese people, a mélange of religious and cultural traditions, and two weeks of walking, it was awesome. And there are so many more places to explore.
