Stephanie Silkwood, AIA, LEED AP, associate at RMW architecture & interiors, has been awarded a Presidential Citation by the AIA California Council. The award recognizes Stephanie’s leadership and advocacy on behalf of emerging architectural professionals in the state.

In giving the award, AIACC President Frank L. Bostrom, AIA, told Stephanie, “Your countless contributions have served your fellow professionals well, and the spirit in which you contribute is an admirable source of inspiration in a seemingly uncertain time where many question the future of the architecture profession.  Implementing numerous programs and activities at all levels of the AIA, your continuing dedication to mainstreaming the energies and perspectives of young practitioners has enabled the AIACC’s Academy of Emerging Professionals to strengthen programs, expand leadership opportunities, and increase local component outreach for the future of the profession.”

Stephanie serves as a voice for young architects through her active involvement with the AIA, NCARB, and the California Architects Board. We sat down with her to find out more about her work with these organizations.

How long have you been involved with these organizations?

I first got involved with the AIA as a student, trying to jump-start a crumbling AIAS chapter at Cal Poly.  The revitalization ended up being a huge success, with membership surging and lots of activity.  I was surprised how many people were looking for an avenue to give back to the profession and the community.  All it took was for one person to say, “Hey, let’s make this happen.”

What form does your involvement take?

I’m active in the local AIA’s Emerging Professionals Committee, which I started in 2010.  We focus on putting together programs for students, interns, and young architects in the Santa Clara Valley region.  For the last two years, I’ve also stepped up to be a voice for emerging professionals at the state and national level, serving on various committees for the AIA, NCARB, and the California Architects Board.  There are many ongoing conversations about the future of the architecture profession, and it only makes sense that emerging professionals should be part of the dialogue.

What inspires your involvement?

I’m inspired by the way one person’s vision and leadership can bring people together to do something good.  I enjoy working with other people who share my passion for advancing the profession and promoting change.
