Project
Confidential State Agency
Sacramento, CA

The Confidential State Agency project represents the most significant workplace transformation we’ve seen to date—a bold response to the post-pandemic world. In a dramatic shift, the agency downsized from over 50,000 sf to just 12,500 sf at 400 Capitol Mall, embracing a hybrid model that aligns with the evolving expectations of a modern workforce. This isn’t about fewer people—it’s about smarter space. With millennials now the largest workforce demographic, the need for flexible, dynamic environments is more relevant than ever. We designed a bright, open industrial space filled with natural light and layered with warm materials like wood veneer and red brick. Multiple work points—from hoteling desks to informal lounge areas—offer staff autonomy and choice.
Standout features include the cozy banquette overlooking Capitol Mall, now a favorite work-and-break spot, and a vibrant café island where colleagues naturally reconnect. These moments, often lost in remote settings, are at the heart of what makes this new office work. This project proves that less can be more: less square footage, more intention. It’s a compelling case for adaptive workplace design that supports flexibility, fosters culture, and redefines what it means to come into the office.
